Your Role


We are looking for a Strain Engineer who will be responsible for engineering and optimising protein overexpression strains in an automated laboratory. You will work with a small interdisciplinary team with complementing scientific backgrounds to push the boundaries of materials science. Technicians will be available to help with the running of the lab, but expertise in genetic engineering of yeast host systems, CRISPR/CAS9 (and troubleshooting), and an understanding of protein overexpression are a must. You will interface with biochemists, bioinformaticians, and machine learning experts to develop an integrated software-experimental pipeline for material learning. You will be one of the early employees, having an outsized impact, shaping the company through your efforts, scientific experience and industry expertise.

Your Responsibilities

  • Adapt and optimise CRISPR/CAS9 or other multiplexed editing tools in our hosts
  • Interpret and experimentally validate hypotheses generated from modelling for improved yield
  • Interaction and optimisation of a high-throughput, automated protein characterisation pipeline
  • Perform lab work including strain transformation, genetic engineering and small-scale culturing
  • Collaborate with core team and clients to push protein towards desired characteristics
  • Help accelerate iterative design-build-test-learn capabilities across teams
  • Develop a scientific and technical vision of the venture together with a collaborative, interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial team

Your Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in biotechnology, metabolic engineering or closely related; Experience with genetic engineering particularly with yeast overexpression systems (S. cerevisiae, P. pastoris)
  • Industrial experience with automated labs is highly desirable
  • Experience with protein overexpression and fermentation techniques is desirable
  • Understanding of both computational biology and machine learning methodologies desirable
